Last year, I wrote about how many of us (me included) default to wearing our skinny trousers or denim instead of experimenting with other styles. This spring, we can turn to wide-leg trousers as an alternative.

If you’ve started making your shopping list for the season, make sure to add a pair of these to the list. I’ve found that Alice + Olivia and Rachel Zoe always make a great version. Pick them up in colors of spring – neutrals, ocean colored blues and shades of pink and peach.

The wide-leg trouser has the potential to look overwhelming on some body types, especially if they aren’t paired with a top that correctly balances out the volume of the design.

High-waisted versions can be worn with a blouse or silk camisole that can be tucked loosely into the pant. While low-waisted versions are perfect with a fitted tee (try the J.Crew Perfect Fitted Tee – one my favorites) or button down. If you are on the petite side, wearing these pants with a pair of heels is a great way to elongate the leg.

While the cropped cigarette pants and skinny jeans are here to stay, wide-leg trousers will be a welcome addition to the wardrobe this spring. Will you try them out?

Here are a few I have on my list.
